Google Places SEO OptimizationI was just watching “Check Please,” a Restaurant review show on channel 9 (KQED – PBS) in the San Francisco Bay Area. I saw this review on a cool Italian restaurant in Sausalito, Marin Co, in the S.F. Bay Area and was ready to plan my next date night with my wife there. BUT, of course I couldn’t resist looking at their website a little closer. I was flabbergasted (is that still a word?) at what I saw. NO SEO at all. I mean ZERO! How Google knew to list them as a ‘Sausalito restaurant’ at all (on page 3), is amazing. Cudo’s to Google. Shame on this restaurant owner.

How much should a small company spend on SEO and Social Media Marketing?

Once a company decides to market online, the tough question always  is, how much to spend.

The folks over at the SEOMOZ conducted a world wide survey of companies like ours (Online marketing and SEO).  We participated in this survey as well and were one of the 47% US based companies. 13% were UK based, 40% were 23 other countries. These companies included in-house marketing firms and agencies, as well as outside contractors and internet marketing consultants.  The bottom line results were: 34% of their clients are spending $1,000 per month or more and about 16% were not on a monthly program. 45% were somewhere in between $100 to $1,000 per month. Is Yelp right for your San Francisco Bay Area company?

We are asked all the time by small companies if they should advertise on Yelp or even pay attention to Yelp at all. In our opinion, the answer depends on the type of company you have.

The first answer (regardless of your company type) is yes, pay attention to Yelp. You probably have a Yelp listing weather you want one or not, so at least take control of your Yelp account and set it up right. You also want to keep an eye on it and see if and what kind of reviews you might be getting. We’ve seen many times when a company has had a half dozen reviews on their company and didn’t even know it. Sometimes this has been good news and sometimes very bad news when the reviews were negative or about another company, thought to be yours! Also, Yelp listings rank pretty well on Google, so you can enhance your social media presents and search engine rankings by making sure your Yelp account is setup right with the right company information and key words.
